How to choose the right thickness of glass for a boat?

In the marine industry the reference regulations are very complex. In fact, compared to traditional windows, such as those in skyscrapers, water pressure plays a fundamental role.

Depending on the glass’s location in the boat, different pressure values need to be considered, mainly dictated by the possibility of it being hit by a wave.

By combining these pressure values with the clear span of the glass, i.e., the glass area not attached to the hull, the minimum thickness of monolithic glass is obtained.

In the formula below, the SIGMA you see in the denominator represents the bending resistance of the glass. This is an intrinsic characteristic of this material that does not vary with thickness or dimensions.

International regulations already provide standard values, for example, for tempered thermal glass.

So how can we intervene to reduce the thickness of the glass on a boat?

In Veneto Vetro we created technical solutions with the glass that allow us to increase the SIGMA value (bending resistance), and therefore reduce the T value indicating the resulting thickness from the formula.

What are the advantages of reducing the thickness of glass?

The advantage is a lightening of the total weight of the boat, with improvements also in terms of energy efficiency.

In concrete terms, how can we increase the bending resistance of glass?

Thanks to the experience gained over time and the numerous checks during the production cycle, Veneto Vetro is able to produce monolithic glass with high resistance to bending.

Then, passing through a very precise layering process, and through the use of mechanically high-performance plastics, we obtain alternative and even improved solutions to the monolithic one.

How do we measure the bending strength of our material?

The compositions are certified through a test regulated by ISO 1288, otherwise known as the 4-point bending test.

Nautical glass requires maximum specialization and know-how. We at Veneto Vetro offer consultancy and support to designers and shipyards right from the design phase of a boat.
